It was July 2009. I had to move into a hostel due to various reasons. I was worried whether I will be able to adjust with my new mates as I was always too much of a reserved person. I chose this hostel as it was near to my work place. It was 8 PM in the night when I reached the place with my luggages. I carried a whole lot of luggages with me basically because before this I was staying in an apartment and as I had my own space and kitchen facilities there that I had made enough things to last another 2 years :) . The driver was too fast in unloading my luggages and he dumped everything front of the hostel gate and vanished. I was clueless as how I can manage things myself. I couldn't call my female friends as they stay too far from that place and it was already past 8. And ofcourse no guys allowed in the ladies hostel.
I had no option but to move the things myself. I had a single room booked in on the 1st floor of the building. It included nothing more than a single bunker bed, a cupboad and a table with chair. But to my astonishment, the room was not ready for my occupancy. The cupboard and the table was yet to be shifted to my room. The concerned person was not available, hence I thought of looking into the matter later. I started moving my things from the hostel gate to the 1st floor. I could see many girls starring at me. Few of them asked "New occupancy?" I nodded with a smile. Had no time for conversation. Not a single girl came to my aid but there was already a gossip going about ME. I heard somebody questioning to the other "How many luggages is she carrying in?" "Looks like she is moving her complete house hold stuffs into her room". I just ignored and continued my work. More than an hour and I was done. My room looked completely loaded and messy.
I had no much energy left to talk to my new mates. Hence, I quickly made my bed and slept off. I woke up with a thud when I heard some marriage chants next to my window. I guessed there must be a marriage hall next to the building. I didnt bother to inquire about it as I was already late to go to office. Oh yes, it was a week day. I had to search so many things out of so many luggages and finally grabbed necessary things to go to the office. As I was fairly new to the place, I was bit unclear about taking the right path to my office. I asked one of the girl who was watching tv which was kept near the kitchen. She was slim and fair. Her looks said that she was quite simple and silent. She tried explaining me something which I couldn't make out. Another girl seated next to her who was having breakfast told me the directions. She too was slim and quite fair with long hair but she had tied it up as she must have had washed her hair just before sometime. I quickly woved a thanks to both and dashed off to my office.
When I came back from office, I used to be puzzled as how to set my things right. I spoke to the concerned person about getting a cupboard and a table and all he could tell me was that it may take a day or two. My room was in a total mess and it was damn difficult to get even a small thing out of my lugagges. I struggled for few days (Oh yes! that owner took nearly a week to get my cupboard) and finally I made up friends with few people. There were few people who spoke my mother tongue and there were people with whom I was speaking in Hindi. Though I dont speak Hindi much I managed blabbering something. Later stage I was able to speak Hindi quite fine. Credit to these northies who were my neigbhours in this hostel. Since it was self cooking hostel, we used to cook food ourselves. That made me learn so many reciepes. It was always fun and happy times enjoying, chatting, gossiping and watching tv with these people. I got along with them very well. Infact, the long hair girl who guided me on my first day is my closest friend now.
In the hostel life, there was some crazy times, some anger, lots of gossips, fun filled and lot more. I enjoyed every bit of it and I have treasured many golden moments of this life. An year passed by, many people kept moving out and lot many new faces entered in. Again new friends and lot many more gossips. Discovering people's behaviour, getting adjusted all were the part of the hostel life.
It was time when I had to move again. Packing and moving out from my room was a painful act. I had even more luggages this time. I had my friends helping me to pack and move it outside. I had few people telling to keep in touch. I heard few of them questioning "Oh! Is she moving?" "Why is she shifting and where is she going?" Well, life has to lead on. I knew I had made enough memories to keep it life long. I also knew that someday when I see them somewhere somehow they will surely greet me or atleast smile at me.
Ofcourse, I was sad. At the same time, I was happy to have made loads of strangers as my friends. Life is such. It walks you to a wonderland and introduces to different kinds of people. You get a chance to choose out of so many people and you choose few with whom you smile, laugh and cry. And one day you have to let them go or they leave you and go. You will get upset but still life has given those people to you to fill your happiness for sometime. Thanks to the life. Never forget those people who walked into your life.
Note: This is taken from my treasured memories of my hostel life. I wanted to put in this story as I still remember most of the moments spent during my hostel life. I value each and every incidents that took place from the talks to the fights. My heartfelt thanks to my hostel mates who were with me.
